A champion of quality physical education, Sims has received the highest honor from SHAPE America Southern District.

His work is now recognized by the Society of Health and Physical Educators Southern District. The group awarded Sims the Donna L. Dunaway Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon a member who honors professional and career-long contributions to the States of Donna Lee Dunaway’s Southern District.

Students and colleagues recognize Dr. Sims as a leader and an encouragement. We are proud of the work she does in the classroom and in the community.
Sims, the ninth recipient of the award, is passionate about educating youth and professionals about the importance of physical activity and quality physical education. During his 37-year career, Sims has demonstrated exemplary contributions and service to the South District and his profession.
Sims received her undergraduate degree from the University of Montevallo and began her teaching career in Appalachian and Jemison High Schools and the School of the Department of Youth Services. She has coached several sports and supervised student teachers at several colleges and universities.
Sims received his Master of Arts and Education Specialist degree from UAB and his Doctorate of Philosophy from the University of Southern Mississippi.
Her leadership roles for her state association (Alabama State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance) include president, vice president of physical education and the general division and the chair or participation in various committees. In the South District, her leadership roles have included the President, Recreation and General Division Vice President, Advocacy and Membership President, Parliamentarian and service on various committees and groups. job.
Sims was named Alabama District 3 Teacher of the Year, Coach of the Year and College Educator of the Year, and received the Pathfinder Award and the NAGWS Honorary Award, an Association award. National for Girls and Women in Sport which recognizes the contributions of girls and women in sport. She was recognized by Alabama and the Southern District as college physical education teacher of the year, high school physical education teacher of the year, and received the Alabama and southern district. Sims continues to serve the Southern District with the same dedication and passion as at the state level.
