More to the story: 80th birthday workout

Dave meets a local man who flexes his muscles on his 80th birthday

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – This is John Disterdick. He lived in Chattanooga for over 20 years. He’s in Florida now. But he will be back in the Scenic City to celebrate his birthday! His 80th birthday.

How will he mark his big day? Dig this: On March 12, John will endure an 8k row, 8k run, 80k bike ride, 800-meter swim, 800 sit-ups, 80 push-ups, and he’ll step into the boxing ring for 8 rounds of sparring.

John has been physically active for 60 years. But this??

“Actually, I never did these events back to back. I did the triathlon in Hawaii. And it’s a long, grueling day. But I don’t do this for the time. I will not go crazy. I just want to do it.”

Disterdick says he’s not only doing this for his physical health, but also for his spiritual health. In fact, he is trying to raise funds for a local ministry that he supports.

Thus, he will attempt a number of events that involve the number 8. In fact, 7 events. He says the 8th event will be rest.

I asked John if he knew most octogenarians don’t do that!

“Well, you know, I think you’re right! Turning 80…..I encourage people to maintain their health and fitness. Again, the most important thing is your spiritual health, but your physical health certainly has its value!

This is not a unique thing for John Disterdick. After his birthday, John will then prepare for the Senior Olympic National Championships in May in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
