More than 71.5 million consumers used US health clubs in 2018, a record since IHRSA began tracking health club use in 1987. According to a study conducted by the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) as part of the Physical Activity Council (PAC), about one in five Americans (20.8%) belong to at least one club or studio in American health. Since 2008, the number of members has increased by 37.1 percent, while the total number of clubbers has increased by 34 percent. The total number of visits to health clubs also increased, reaching 6.1 billion visits in 2018, up from 4.3 billion in 2008.

At 39,570, the number of health club facilities increased 2.8% from the previous year, up from 38,477 locations. In 2018, the revenue of the US fitness club industry reached $ 32.3 billion, up from $ 30 billion in 2017, a growth of 7.8%.

Methodology: Each year, the IHRSA conducts an annual survey of health club consumers as part of the Physical Activity Council (PAC). The PAC is made up of six leading sports associations and manufacturers who are dedicated to increasing participation in their respective sports and activities. In 2018, a total of 20,069 online interviews were conducted with a national sample of individuals and households from the US online panel of over 1 million people operated by IPSOS. The total panel is maintained to be representative of the US population for those six years of age and older. Oversampling of ethnic groups took place to stimulate responses from generally under-responding groups.
