Here’s a look at the FBI’s Physical Fitness Test with the Phoenix Division

PHOENIX – Do you have what it takes to become an FBI agent? I tried to answer this question myself by participating in the physical fitness test at the Phoenix Division of the FBI.

The test has four separate events: as many sit-ups as possible in one minute, a timed 300-meter sprint, the maximum number of continuous push-ups, and a timed 1.5-mile run.

All events are scored on a point system and a contestant needs 12 points to pass. A five-minute break between each event is all that is allowed. The agents haven’t taken my bribes for longer – curse their integrity.

Kevin Smith, public affairs manager for the agency’s Phoenix division, said the physical fitness test is key to ensuring a potential agent has what it takes for the job.

“Our officers encounter all kinds of different scenarios when they’re in the field,” he said. “What’s so important about fitness is that we know we’re fit and we can come to work 24 hours a day and get it done.”

I started out strong, passing sit-ups, timed sprints and push-ups.

Only two points were needed for the 1.5 mile run, meaning I had what it took to become an FBI agent if I was able to get the minimum time.

Let’s say that didn’t happen.

Previous events had taken their toll, and running is definitely not my forte.

The test made me appreciate the men and women who succeed and become FBI agents.

I haven’t been invited to Quantico, so I guess KTAR will be stuck with me for a bit longer.
