Genesis Health Club, based in Kansas, announced in March that he planned to purchase the old Sears building at Southridge Mall, 111 E. Army Post Road, and convert the structure into a fitness and athletics complex.
Plans for the 108,807 square feet of space, which has been vacant since Sears closed its store and automotive hub in August 2016, include:

⢠41,766 square feet for a health club, which will include areas for cardio, weight training, aerobics and cycling. Changing rooms with hammams and showers are also provided.
⢠A 25 meter swimming pool with five lanes and a depth of 4 feet.
⢠Daycare.
The building’s structure will be altered to accommodate the basketball courts, according to a project description provided to members of the Des Moines Urban Design Review Board, who approved preliminary designs for the project on Tuesday.
Columns currently in space will be removed and the ceiling raised “to provide the proper clearances required for basketball and volleyball,” according to the story.
Construction, estimated at $ 16.5 million, is expected to begin later this year and be completed in mid-2022.
The project is expected to receive up to $ 9.6 million in additional financial assistance to be paid over a 20-year period.
